Review: DeWalt DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit
The DeWalt DCD970KL Drill will handle anything from wood, to masonry, steel, and concrete. It has a very efficient motor and versatility that allows users to get fastening and drilling tasks done quickly. It has an all-metal, three speed transmission for job-specific performance and a comfortable grip to keep you going longer. The DeWalt XRP extended run time lithium-ion batteries provide an additional 40% extra run time than standard Ni-Cad batteries. This kit includes a convenient one-hour lithium-ion charger, two 18-volt XRP lithium-ion batteries, a 360-degree side handle, and a sturdy kit box.
Pros
The DeWalt DCD970KL as you can imagine offers a lot of power and torque. A 5 gallon pale of drywall can be mixed using the low speed, a 4″ hole saw can be cut into wood at medium speed, and 3.5″ deck screws can be driven into dry wood at high speed. You can drill into concrete and block with masonry bits without much difficulty. It’s capable of cutting 5′ holes in Blue Board cutters, plywood, stucco, and Hardie board.
It comes with three speeds, which may or may not be your preference. Most cordless drills only have two speeds, but having three makes it more versatile and convenient. The low speed is for precision driving, and the 3 speed is for heavy duty jobs such as concrete and thick lumber. You can easily switch it to the speed that is necessary for the task at hand, which can be a time saver.
While it’s heavier (5.25 pounds) than some of its competitors, it also provides more power for longer stretches and rarely will you even need to use the extra battery. The battery also charges very quickly, and with the extra battery you can continue to work for as long as you want to. The battery life will not disappoint you, and the LED light is always a nice feature to have.
With any DeWalt tool, you can always expect to get durability, and the DeWalt DCD970KL is no different. Whether something falls on it or it’s dropped continuously, it will endure whatever comes its way.
Cons
This drill is heavier and longer than other comparable drills, but also has more power. So if you need something that is compact and lightweight, then this may not be the drill for you. It won’t fit into tight spaces well, but you can use the hammer instead of the driver if you aren’t able to get good leverage.
Conclusion
If you want three speeds, tons of power and torque, reliability, long battery life, and durability, then you can’t go wrong with the DeWalt DCD970KL

Customer Reviews
This is an excellent drill if you need something with ALOT of power and torque. I have only used it a couple of times for rebuilding wooden gates and privacy fences, and I must say, it’s one of the best cordless drills I have ever owned. The Lithium-Ion batteries hold up very well and recharge fairly quickly. This is NOT a lightweight drill, so prepare yourself for the weight (adds to the stability and less fatigue when boring through thick timber). It is well worth every dollar you spend. – Gene Martin
This is a good drill apart from the hammer function. The problem is that when not in hammer position the shaft/chuck can move back and forward with a spring load. Its not ideal when you screw. You loose the control of the tip. Some people may not worry about it, but I do not like that. – M. Sivertsen
I have had several Dewalt Hammerdrills but this one is the best. Lith-ion battery reduced the weight substantially. The upgraded chuck is a great plus, no slippage. – mbiurgie
