Review: Bosch 36618-02 18-Volt Cordless Drill

The Bosch 36618-02 18-Volt Cordless Drill is compact, powerful, and built tough to get results. Durashield housing is featured to protect against wear and tear. The 18-volt Lithium battery will last longer by 35% and come with twice as many recharge cycles when compared to other competitors. It takes only 15 minutes of charging to get to 85% capacity, and 30 minutes for a full charge. Because it weighs lighter than most 18-volt cordless drills, you will be able to get more work down without feeling tired. The single-sleeve 1/2-inch chuck allows for one-handed bit changes. The Bosch 36618-02 is ideal for a wide range of jobs, from building a deck, to fixing cars, or for home improvement.

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Durable
  • Well Constructed
  • Lightweight (3.7 pounds)
  • Battery Life
  • Extra Battery
  • Charge Time
  • LED Light

There is a lot to like about the Bosch 36618-02. It has a lot of power and torque for what it’s designed to do (500 lbs. of torque), while being compact and lightweight. It’s size works well in tight spaces. The single-sleeve chuck allows for quick bit changes, and makes a clicking sound when it’s locked. This drill is very well made, and is protected by the Durashield housing for protection.

The Lithium Ion battery is one of the best features of the Bosch 36618-02. Even when the battery is wearing down, the performance of the drill is not affected. The battery charges less than 30 minutes, though you will be able to use for quite some time before a charge is needed.

Bosch has an excellent reputation for their power tools, as their craftsmanship is right up there with the other top brands. This drill exemplifies their quality.

Cons

  • Grip Comfort

This isn’t the most comfortable grip that you will find on a cordless drill, but it’s not exactly uncomfortable either. The handle is angled a bit, and after awhile can cause some fatigue. The fwd/rev switch should be a bit closer to the trigger. The only other complaint is that the chuck holder is useless and the lack of a belt clip.

Customer Reviews

It has an excellent power to weight ratio and is very smooth/refined. I have the slim pack batteries and they hold a good charge. I have only owned the 18v for two weeks now so I can’t comment on it’s long term reliability, but I have used it for sinking numerous 3″ deckmates into framing lumber, speedbores, small holesaws, backerboard screws, and other fasteners. As an every day user, I am very happy with this purchase. – The Dude (California)

I purchased the Bosch to replace another 18v that stopped working. I was impressed with the balance, lightweight (compaired to a NiCa) and the exceptional sensitivity of the variable speed contol. I also like the led light under the A good quality product. Negative features are a poorly designed bit holder (it doesn’t work!) and no belt hook. Other than that a great quality tool. – Bullfrog (Charlotte, NC)

Used it to build 4 picnic tables from Rockler plans in a college class. Four work crews, 3 days, hundred of screws in green treated lumber, one charge. Amazing torque, did not need to recharge. Students are Construction management majors and future shop teachers. They were impressed, as was I. Preschoolers came and helped assemble the tables (donated to their preschool) and the clutch worked well to allow the screw to be driven to the correct depth. I love this drill. Oh, and the light is sweet when working in dim areas. – G. Worner (Wayne, NE)
